Marathon Key or Vaca (Cow) Key,
Tropical Tunes
as it is known on the charts, has an all together different flavor than Key Largo or Islamorada.
It is "the Heart of the Keys", and the gateway to the Lower Keys & Key West. Originally, it was named during the construction of Henry Flagler's railroad which ran from Miami to Key West in the early 1900s. You can still see the remnants of the old railroad bridges, now closed to traffic, in the Marathon area. Every one agrees they make a fine fishing pier. Fishing boats can be seen circling the area; it seems the fish like it, too.
Marathon also has an airport and a nine hole golf course. With a number of fine restaurants, great hotels, and good ole Southern hospitality, Marathon can be your key to paradise.

As you leave Marathon and enter the Lower Keys, you first travel over the Seven Mile Bridge - seven miles of bridge over the ocean/bay with nothing under you but the bridge & the briny. A breathtaking sight!! |
As you leave the Seven Mile Bridge, you enter the Key Deer Preserve & a very low speed limit..... 45mph during the day & 35mph at night. Don't think it's not enforced; it is heavily enforced!!
Speeding tickets are expensive in the Keys.
So, if someone is going slow in front of you, just think about the
fact that they're saving you from an expensive speeding ticket!
The Lower Keys also have
their fascinating attractions like the Key Deer Preserve, Looe Key
Reef diving, and the Bahia Honda State Park - voted #2 overall in
excellence of US beaches. Here is the Keys Frozen in time.
Fishing boats rent by the day for
diving also.
